The Schtick: This is High Banks Double Double – a 5 year whiskey that is aged again (twice) in new oak barrels. Its bottled at 58.15 ABV although there is some variability in releases out there. Double Oaking is certainly a hot topic now. Can it impress? Lets dive in! Stock image, if you couldnt tell.

Review #2595 | Bourbon Review #1124

Distiller: MGP

Bottler: High Bank

Brand: High Bank Whiskey War

Selection: None – General Release

ABV: 58.15% ABV

Age: NAS

Nose: Cocoa, fudge, toffee, butter pecan. Dessert forward with a notable amount of chocolate and fudge and dessert notes entirely.

Taste: Moderate palate, a little woody, touch spicy / ethanol. Honey, lovely oak, a hint of youth, plenty of coco. The cocoa leads and the youth feels both a little too much wood and a little too much age at the same time.

Finish: Moderate finish, youth is gone, cocoa, root beer, sweet tea and oak.

Overall: I like this and it’s well on its way, little youth on the palate is whats detracting for now. That doesnt mean I think the whiskey is too young, rather I think they double oaked too short a time. I think a long maturation in a second new oak rather than the 2nd and 3rd re-oaking would work better here, but it would sort of redefine the schtick.

Thanks for reading!
