The Schtick: Another throwback review as I revisit some greats and some favorites I reviewed a year+ ago. I won’t be hitting everything I’ve previously reviewed but there are some standouts and big names as well as some stalwarts that I could see value in tasting the current iterations of (like Eagle Rare 10 – my first review, for instance) – today we are hitting the 2023 rendition of Michter’s 10 year bourbon. Let’s dive in.

Disclosure: Sample provided by producer, back when I wrote elsewhere.

Review #2638 | Whiskey Review #1134

Distiller: Michter’s

Bottler: Michter’s

Brand: Michters

Selection: None – General LTO Release

ABV: 47.2% ABV

Age: 10 Years

Nose: Rich and sugar forward: brown sugar, turbinado and Demerara with plenty of oak, some raisin, a good deal (not not as much as 2024) of banana bread and walnut with a hint of spice.

Taste: Rich palate, oak first with sweet and spice taking turns. Brown sugar, toffee and banana bread pop first with black pepper, oaky spice and cinnamon second. I’m impressed at how well integrated the oak is, the lower proof doesn’t feel like a sacrifice in terms of tannin although it is a little thinner. Nice toffee and some candied ginger on the back palate.

Finish: Moderate finish, not as long as 24, but plenty fun: brown sugar, toffee and butter cream meets slight oak, a hint of floral character and big banana walnut muffin notes once again – that note is especially pronounced these days.

Overall: Overall, these are always a great reminder that proof does not equal passion and this whiskey has plenty going for it despite a sub 100 proof point. It’s complex, delicious and easy to enjoy while having plenty to pick apart and be interested in.

Thanks for reading!
