Review #2591 – Found North 21yr Peregrine 2024

The Schtick: The second release of Peregrine and following the first flight release, this bottling features whiskeys 21 to 25 years old finished in Cognac and New American oak casks, for a final mashbill of 78, 21 and 1 (corn, rye, malted barley). It is bottled at barrel strength so lets get to it.

Nose: Honey, apples, pears, orange peel, creamsicle, a pop of pepper and tons of maple, caramels, and brulee. It’s a little less indulgent on the nose from a dessert character with bright fruits and acidity. Really nice.

Taste: Rich on the palate. It’s syrupy and that indulgent character is back. Rich, a pop of ethanol but well mannered and not too racy and aggressive. Layers and layers, apples, apple butter, cinnamon, a pop of pepper, ginger, nutmeg and loads of sweet oak and fat caramels.

Finish: Moderate finish, a tad prickly but packed full with maple, heavy oak, pepper, more apple, pear, orange peel and that bright, fun, fruity character.

Overall: One of my favorite elements is also thankfully a defining element for Found North’s whiskeys – they are always quite interesting and rare double down on a specific type of tasting note. There’s fruit, acidity, dessert character, some oak – never one noted or too singular. This manages to do that quite well although I still find myself with a preference for the first Peregrine. That said, this is no slouch, and nothing short of Excellent.
