Nose: Pungent fruits: blackberry, cranberry, cherry and a hint of orange, lime and boysenberry. Tannin follows – it’s a rich nose and loaded with concentrated notes of oak, jams and berries, tannin and toffee. Opulently doughy and brioche backed.

Taste: Rich palate, full of fruits and woodiness once again. A typical complaint of Canadian whiskeys is that they are singular and simple and this is neither. Decadent caramel, cranberry and blackberry partner with Luxardo cherry and strong toffee notes throughout. Proof is well placed, tannin is heavy and indulgent. This is a different whiskey than you’ve tasted from Found North before and it’s unusual – unusually drinkable.

Finish: Long finish, the tannin shines here most brightly alongside the jammy port qualities: strong oak, lovely creme brulee and brioche dessert qualities: pillowy, rich, layered. Devoid of bitterness, no over-oaking. Blackberry sticks around.

Overall: Overall, this is pretty new direction for Found North, introducing far more tannin than I’ve seen in their whiskeys before and also far more port influence. The high rye shows here as does the finishing process within Found North and our first Snow Day from Found North is an exciting one. For the Found North fan who thinks they already have it all, Snow Day is a departure from a consistent house style we’ve seen these past years and brings a bright excitement on the fresh drop of First Flurry.
