The Schtick: I once reviewed this bottle some time ago. Now that I’m an independent again, I’ve gotten the bug to re-review a number of notable old whiskeys who’s initial reviews I no longer own. A number of Michter’s releases are sitting in my cabinet that make the cut in my move in early 2025. It sounds like its time for a new series. Michter’s 10 year is a single barrel bourbon release from Michter’s, distilled in Kentucky by someone, and bottled by Michter’s. There’s a lot of conjecture that these releases have older whiskey in them. After numerous pours and more than a year of airtime – how does this pour fare? Let’s dive in.

Age: 10 Years
Nose: Rich and woody at first, brown sugar meets some banana bread, candied walnuts, cinnamon, sugar, a hint of clove and big pepper. Warm, rich, gooey caramels on the nose with a hint of oak. Light cola. Banana swings back through.
Taste: Rich and viscous despite the “lower” proof – it’s got a nice viscosity, woody tannin structure and plenty of maple despite a sub-100 proof and I appreciate that. Over the time it’s been open, it’s developed into a super-maple forward banana bread with a walnut thing going on and gobs of oak. Pleasant balancing spice. Quite nice for the colder weather.
Finish: Long finish, less oaky here and more spice: pepper, cinnamon, clove and more maple, banana and a fun toffee note develops.
Overall: Overall, I think Michter’s does a good job consistently writing the book on “low proof, big flavor” and this is no exception. It goes to show that while I think this is probably older than 10 years due to the strong tannin profile, not everything has to be big ABV’s to be big on flavor. It’s a consistently great pour and a year or more of air time has only done it wonders.
