Nose: The nose is herbaceous, spicy, sweet. Some ryes are all herbal or all dessert. This one is a great blend of peppery rye and big brown sugar. It’s definitely a Kentucky style rye – those big sweet dessert notes are still there in droves and this has plenty going on.
Taste: Pleasant palate. Spicy at first with a pop of pepper, ginger, herbal rye, some dill, but just a little. Then it goes sweet: big baked pastries, brown sugar, creamy vanilla, big bold brown sugar. More sweet than spice overall. Present oak but not overbearing.
Finish: Moderate finish – plentiful brown sugar meets more zest and rye spice than the palate. Ginger, black pepper, some allspice and anise and big rye kick. Touch of butterscotch and brown sugar. I was curious if the spice would diminish with time but it’s only built up. Nice.
Overall: This is a spicy release and I feel like it has far more rye spice than I remember – and that’s a good thing. Michter’s sort of has the reputation of a balanced, albeit at lack of bold, profile on these and I gotta say – nothing meek about it. Killer rye.
