Hawk's Rock

Sazerac, the parent company of Buffalo Trace Distillery, announced that it has just rebranded the Lough Gill distillery it acquired in 2022 with a new name: Hawk’s Rock Distillery.

The Buffalo Trace parent company shares that the distillery was named after a rock outcropping in the Ox Mountains that inspired the play “At The Hawk’s Well,” written by the famous poet William Butler Yeats.

“This rebrand is just the beginning for Hawk’s Rock Distillery,” said Sazerac President and CEO Jake Wenz in a statement. “Throughout the changes at Hawk’s Rock, our vision remains the same — creating a track record for the aging and blending of award-winning whiskeys — and this name change brings us one step closer to bringing that vision to life.”

Operations will remain mostly the same and Master Blender Helen Mulholland will continue to oversee the blending process at the 100-acre property in County Sligo, Ireland.

Sazerac acquired the Lough Gill Distillery in 2022 and the brand expanded warehouse and production capacities, made modern adaptations to the distillery’s equipment and upgraded features at the warehouse.

Sazerac appears to be thinking globally with its robust portfolio. In addition to being the parent company behind the storied American whiskey brand Buffalo Trace, the company also owns Paul John, an Indian whiskey brand. The company additionally owns Domaine Sazerac de Segonzac in Cognac. Sazerac shared that it intends to develop a visitor experience at Hawk’s Rock soon.

“The renaming of Hawk’s Rock Distillery marks a new, yet familiar, frontier for us,” Wenz continued. “Sazerac is known for its balanced approach to honoring tradition while embracing change in a constant pursuit of crafting the world’s best spirits at our distilleries in America, India, Canada and France. Our mission holds true for Ireland, and we are excited to reveal how we are blending time-honored traditions with bold innovation to advance the art of Irish whiskey-making.”
