The Schtick: Old Elk has had an interesting ride lately. In the time between when I received this sample and when I am posting this review now, they’ve been sold to Middle West Spirits in Ohio. This release features slow cask reduction from cask strength to 88 proof – a process I’m familiar with and a strong supporter of. Lets dive in!

Review #2593 | Bourbon Review #1123

Distiller: MGP

Bottler: Old Elk

Brand: Old Elk

Selection: None – General Release

ABV: 44% ABV

Age: NAS

Nose: Honey, pleasant plum and tobacco, a light leather sort of note, pecan and walnuts, cocoa and a hint of oak.

Taste: Pleasant on the palate. Nice mouthfeel, it has quite a bit of character for 88pf. Honey, caramel candies, light butterscotch, cocoa and sweet oak pop.

Finish: Moderate finish, light on oak, toffee, butter cream and a hint of pepper.

Overall: Pleasant and easy drinking, more complex than I’d anticipate at this proof and it makes for a great lower proof sipper. Great as a warm weather sipper, but I wouldn’t expect this to go toe to toe with their bolder releases, or better yet my favorites of theirs from the single barrel program.

Thanks for reading!
