Elijah Craig cologne is the latest offering to launch from the storied bourbon brand owned by Heaven Hill. The whiskey company announced on Nov. 18 that the Heaven Hill-owned bourbon brand was venturing into the scent space with a new cologne in honor of its whiskeys. Each bottle of Elijah Craig Char No. 3 cologne costs a relatively modest $49.99.
Elijah Craig shares that this fragrance features aromas of juniper berry, lavandin, and orange blossom for its top notes. As far as mid-tones, the scent offers up notes of nutmeg, birch wood and oak barrels coupled by base notes of vanilla and cocoa.
“Elijah Craig’s pioneering approach to Bourbon-making, especially the art of barrel charring, has always been about craftsmanship, depth and character,” said Associate Vice President of Global Whiskey Brands at Heaven Hill, Max Stefka, in a statement. “Those same qualities naturally lend themselves to a fragrance — one that captures the spirit of our legacy through a rich, layered scent experience that feels unmistakably Elijah Craig.”
The brand shares that the boozy scent was inspired by the team’s study of charred oak staves. Symrise, a fine fragrance company performed the study and the cologne was developed by Crafting Beauty. Elijah Craig shares that the cologne can be pre-ordered at this link, and also picked up in person at Heaven Hill’s Bourbon Experience in Bardstown, Kentucky.
Other Bourbon-Inspired Scents from Forces Behind Major Brands
Heaven Hill’s choice in creating an Elijah Craig Bourbon-inspired cologne certainly marks a departure for the bourbon brand, but it isn’t the first whiskey brand to enter the world of fragrance.
Jackie Zykan, the former Master Taster for Old Forester, has been experimenting with bourbon-inspired perfumes for quite some time now. She launched her fragrance line Oduoak in 2020.
With names like Fly South, Alpine Honey and Dead Horses, these perfumes differ from the Elijah Craig in that they have an actual whiskey base. They retail for around $93 for a 25ml bottle, marking a significant price increase from Elijah Craig’s Char No. 3. In a piece for StyleBlueprint, Zykan shared that the fragrance launch was initially part of a research project so she could better describe scent and flavor profiles.
“It was an interesting, weird little passion to fall into,” Zykan said, according to Style Blueprint.
