The Schtick: One of the usual annual releases from Buffalo Trace comes under the E.H. Taylor (of the Colonel variety) Barrel Proof line. Most years it seems there are two batches, but things have gotten fuzzier as of late. That said, I picked this up in early 2024 after not seeing one for a good while and what can I say? I like barrel aged bourbon and this was priced well, so it was a no brainer. Does it live up to the earliest batches? It doesn’t look like I’ve put pen to paper on this guy yet so this is a fresh one (review). Let’s dive in.

Disclosure: None – purchased at retail.

Review #2642 | Whiskey Review #1136

Distiller: Buffalo Trace

Bottler: Buffalo Trace

Brand: Colonel EH Taylor

Selection: None – General LTO Release

ABV: 63.65% ABV

Age: NAS

Nose: Rich brown sugar and big bold cinnamon. It’s punchy on the nose, loaded with spice, a good bit of toffee and brown sugar, caramel candies and a touch of red fruits and apple butter.

Taste: Rich on the palate. It’s pretty easy drinking for the proof and it’s got plenty of oak, but not too much. Apples butter note is really prominent here: apple, apple skin, cinnamon, some nutmeg, brown sugar, little bit of this pie crust thing going on. Really quite nice here.

Finish: Long finish, probably my favorite part. Viscous, hangs around a bit, loads of apple butter, brown sugar, brown butter, maple and pie crust with this big, peppery, oaky backbone.

Overall: Well, the Colonel is in the house and this is really quite nice – balanced, bold, loaded with sweet and spice. 2024 was a good year, I’ll say.

Thanks for reading!
