Fred Minnick reported on Wednesday that another Tennessee whiskey brand appears to be hopping on the large format trend, Chattanooga Whiskey. The brand is dropping a 1.5-liter bottle size of its Chattanooga Whiskey 91, and a bottle hosts a suggested retail price of $59.99.
“It’s been nearly 10 years since the Chattanooga Whiskey 91 recipe was developed,” said Founding Distiller Grant McCracken in a statement. “Since then, it’s not only grown into our signature recipe, but has also become a craft whiskey staple, valued for its depth of flavor and the story behind it. By putting 91 into a 1.5 liter bottle, we get to share that unmatched character and timeless story with even more people, in even more moments.”
Chatanooga Whiskey 91 has quite the history, and it originates from Barrel 91 at the Experimental Distillery, which was chosen from the company’s first 100 experimental barrels. The brand shares all of its steps in the production process on the bottle, describing the process for its trademarked Tennessee High Malt Style.
“We’ve always been proud to show off every detail behind our whiskey,” said McCracken in a statement. “Roasted and toasted caramel and honey malts, extended fermentations, custom toasted barrels, solera finishing — we want everyone to see the intention behind every step. You don’t usually see a craft whiskey like this in a 1.5-liter bottle — and this bigger stage lets all those details speak louder.”
Another Tennessee Whiskey Brand Goes Big This Year
In early November, Jack Daniel’s shared that it was releasing its signature Old No. 7 Whiskey in a hefty 3-liter format. Apparently, this size has not been available since before Prohibition. The giant whiskey bottle hosted a suggested retail price of $80. This large size was approved by the Tobacco, Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) back in January.
Given the current excess supply of whiskey that The Spirits Business reported in October, it’s quite possible that we may be seeing more large format releases in the future — a bright side to troubled times..
