Disaronno

Disaronno announced on April 2 that the Italian liqueur brand was celebrating its 500th anniversary. The company behind the famous amaretto liqueur will be kicking off a series of celebrations in over 160 countries where Disaronno is distributed.

“For 500 years, Disaronno has been a symbol of Italian craftsmanship, style and timeless quality,” said CEO of Disaronno International USA LLC Robert Cullins in a statement. “This milestone is more than a celebration of our heritage — it’s a tribute to the passion and innovation that have made Disaronno a global icon. As we mark this extraordinary anniversary, we are excited to share the essence of Italian Dolcevita with the world, uniting cultures and generations through the unmistakable taste and elegance of Disaronno.”

Disaronno shares that its roots date back to 1525, according to a legend. One of Leonardo da Vinci’s pupils was hired to paint the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Miracles in Saronno, and he chose a local innkeeper to portray the Madonna in his painting “The Adoration of the Magi.” The innkeeper thanked him by preparing the prototype of the recipe of Disaronno. One hundred years later, the Reina family figured out the recipe and thus, Disaronno was born.

To celebrate Disaronno’s 500th Anniversary, the brand is launching its own cocktail, the “Dolcevita,” which is an Italian twist on a traditional whiskey sour. The recipe was created by Drink Kong Bar in Rome Mixologist Patrick Pistolesi, and it can be accessed below.

“Disaronno’s 500th anniversary is a milestone that celebrates our rich heritage while embracing the future,” said CEO of Illva Saronno Group Marco Ferrari in a statement. “As a proud ambassador of the Italian Dolcevita, Disaronno continues to embody elegance and taste, seamlessly blending tradition with modernity. This anniversary is not just a reflection of our past, but a testament to the unmistakable Italian style that will carry us forward for generations to come.”

The brand’s parent company, Illva Saronno Holding SPA, owns Sagamore Spirit, the Maryland brand specializing in rye whiskey. The company purchased Sagamore in October 2023.
