Provenance Bourbon

On Monday, Middleburg Barrel Company announced the release of 1787 Provenance Bourbon. The brand the brainchild of its Founder, Viyas Sundaram and our Founder, Jay West. West serves as the Provenance Bourbon’s Personal Whiskeymaker, marking an exciting new chapter in his career from critic to creator. The brand shares on its website that its values stem from the experience that bourbon creates, and it offers services like guided tastings and barrel pick experiences.

The inaugural releases of 1787 Provenance feature two expressions: a 7-year and a 14-year bourbon with a $69.99 and $259.99 price tag. Distilled in Bardstown, the 7-year-old expression clocks in at 107 proof. It features layered aromas of baking spices, interlaced with toffee and tobacco. The older sibling was distilled in Frankfort, Kentucky. The whiskey is bold and almost chewy in texture, with Luxardo cherries, cracked pepper and brown sugar.

“Provenance is about honoring the past while shaping bourbon’s future,” said Founder Viyas Sundaram in a statement. “We built this brand to showcase how exceptional barrels and thoughtful blending can create whiskeys that stand with the very best. Today’s consumers are more thoughtful about what they choose to drink, and Provenance is designed for that mindset; it’s an invitation to experience bourbon in a way that’s immersive, personal and meant to be savored with intention. My vision has always been to preserve history while building something new — and with Provenance, we’re doing exactly that.”

Provenance shares that its calling card involves the barrel selection process. West surveys each barrel and brings his expertise from years of experience as a whiskey critic before hand-selecting and blending them to perfection. West made his mark by inventing the T8ke Scale and grew his following by working as a critic and Editor in Chief for Whiskey Raiders. After tasting and reviewing thousands of whiskeys, the blending process seemed like a logical next step.

The barrels spend time maturing to perfection in brand new rickhouses on a 121-acre property with a rich history. Those interested in visiting Provenance Bourbon’s facilities can choose their own bourbon adventures and participate in a “thieving process.” Guests can additionally purchase entire barrels from over 2,000 casks aging at the facilities.

A true whiskey renaissance man, Jay West additionally works as a Principal Whiskeymaker for his other bottling project, The Reveries, while running his single-barrel program.
