The Moodie Davitt Report announced the rollout of Johnnie Walker’s Black Ruby expression and that it would be hitting shelves of Global Travel Retail shops worldwide on Thursday.
The brand shared that this latest move followed an earlier launch in 2024. The expression promises a sweeter profile and hosts a suggested retail price of $45 in addition to an ABV of 40%.
“At the heart of Johnnie Walker Black Ruby is an expression from the boldly progressive distillery of Roseisle,” said Master Blender Dr. Emma Walker according to The Moodie Davitt Report. “Its sweet red berry notes and light, delicate green-grass character are driven by our newest and one of our most innovative single malt distilleries. The team and I experimented with different distillation techniques at Roseisle, eventually focusing on a uniquely fruity distillate.”
Walker claimed the whisky underwent a longer fermentation process, to elevate the fruity qualities within the pour. The brand made sure the spirit spent more time in contact with the copper stills, which softened some of the heavier flavors.
“With vibrant notes of rich raspberry jam, blackberry pie and deep honeyed sweetness, Johnnie Walker Black Ruby tantalizes the palate with bold accents of figs, plums and maraschino cherries,” Walker expressed according to The Moodie Davit Report. “There is a subtle hint of spice and delicate smoke that adds to the complexity, creating a unique and vibrant energy in every sip.”
The Spirits Business shared that Black Ruby had “pilot activations” in 2024 in the following locations: Mexico City, Mexico, Sydney, Australia and San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The outlet shared that though Roseisle is the prominent whisky in the blend, other scotch distilleries’ whiskies were added as well. Johnnie Walker included whiskies from Cardhu, Cameronbridge, Caol Ila, Clynelish and Glenkinchie.
The Spirits Business reported that the Rosweisle whiskies spent time aging in first-fill red wine barrels, and that the Diageo-owned brand implemented Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks and ex-Bourbon barrels in the aging process as well.
“Johnnie Walker Black Ruby marks a bold evolution in our Black Collection that takes inspiration from the classic notes of Black Label and is crafted for the modern cocktail scene,” said Global Brand Director of Johnnie Walker Jennifer English according to The Spirits Business. “As Scotch embraces more creativity in mixology, we see an opportunity to offer a bold, versatile flavor.”
