The Macallan

Food and Wine reported that The Macallan added a new release to its Distil Your World Collection. Just 500 whiskies will be available for purchase within the United States, and each bottle of non age-stated scotch hosts an MSRP of a hefty $4,750.

For the release, team members from the Speyside whisky brand joined forces with the Roca brothers, a duo of Michelin star chefs who own the restaurant El Celler de Can Roca in Spain. For each release within the collection, the brothers venture to the city “on a sensorial quest” to translate the essence of the city in liquid form. This time, they ventured with the Macallan’s Lead Whisky Maker Euan Kennedy.

“Hong Kong is always evolving, a city of sprawling skyscrapers and bustling streets that is constantly reinventing itself, designing new artistic conceptions of the urban environment in coexistence with a unique and timeless cultural heritage,” said Kennedy according to Food and Wine. “The whisky captures this dynamic energy, where modern innovation exists in harmony with deep-rooted traditions.”

The scotch was a marriage of liquid aged in sherry-seasoned European oak hogshead with American oak barrels that were chosen by the Macallan’s team by hand.

The bottle additionally depicts a cityscape drawn by visual artist Pat WingShan — who goes by the monicker Flyingpig. WingShan is an assistant professor at the Academy of Visual Art at Hong Kong Baptist University.

The liquid inside possesses a “symphony of flavors” according to The Macallan. The Scotch whisky brand claims there’s a rich intense prickle of heat from ginger, spice and antique oak that plays beautifully with mango and grapefruit aromas. The brand shares that this layered scotch whisky is “rich” and “multifaceted” like the city it is meant to depict.

Though this scotch undoubtedly hosts a hefty price tag, Food and Wine shares that previous expressions from The Macallan’s Distill Your World Collection have sold for $81,250 at Sotheby’s for a charity auction. The bottle was The Macallan Distil Your World Mexico Single Cask Edition 2005.

The auction house shared that it was one of two bottles made and the only one the brand offered up for sale from that vintage. Bottles of The Macallan tend to perform incredibly well at auction. In Nov. 2023, The Macallan’s Adami Bottle sold for $2.7 million, breaking records at the time for the most expensive bottle of alcohol ever to sell at an auction, according to Whisky Advocate.
