The Spirits Business reported that Molson Coors unveiled its third-quarter earnings for 2025. The company reported a loss of $75.3 million for its bourbon brand, Blue Run Spirits, after buying it in August 2023. Market Screener reported that Molson Coors paid $65 million in cash and acquired 75% of it for $78 million.
The brewing conglomerate cited “lower financial volume, cost inflation related to materials and manufacturing expenses,” which were slightly impacted by the brewery’s decision to slow or sell off portions of its American craft businesses.
Regardless, such a loss is more than substantial. To add insult to injury, Molson Coors reported a decline of 4.6% in income for the first nine months of 2025.
In late October, the brewery shared it would be laying off 400 people by the end of the year. The company cited a desire to be more adaptable in light of the current headwinds facing the alcohol industry.
“We’ve made progress on our transformation journey, but given the environment, we must transform even faster,” said Molson Coors CEO and President Rahul Goyal in a statement. “To win with our customers and consumers and return to growth, we must move with urgency and make bolder decisions. We are moving quickly and intentionally on a longterm, achievable strategy that continues our journey to become a total beverage company and that we believe puts us on the path to sustainable growth.”
About Blue Run
Blue Run often receives the credit of “sneakerizing” the whiskey industry. The brand released limited-edition whiskeys in drops, creating a lot of hype around certain releases. When the whiskeys sell out, they’re gone. In addition to its unique to-market strategy, Blue Run doesn’t shy away from experimental releases.
In August, the brand released “Glimmer,” a cask-finished bourbon that spent time in Barr Hill’s Tomcat Gin barrels. The bourbon marked a major milestone for Coors Spirits Co.’s Head of Whiskey Development and Innovation Shaylyn Gammon; it was her first release.
Just a few months earlier, Blue Run announced its summery flight series. The May release features “micro batch” releases like Beach & Blooms, a whiskey inspired by coastal flowers. Other releases included desert-inspired Buck & Brush, a whiskey with sassafras, black cherries and pepper.
