Forbes reported on August 20 that Port Ellen, a resurrected ghost distillery, is partnering once again with the legendary Distillers One of One Auction. This year’s release is the brand’s oldest whisky yet. The 46-year-old scotch rests in a striking, almost sci-fi-inspired decanter, and it could fetch $400,000 at auction.
Distilled in 1978, Port Ellen Prism rests in a 1.5 liter decanter created by the artist Wilfried Grootens. Grootens’ claim to fame is glass painting, and he started down this career path at 15. According to Plateaux UK, Grootens stacks and paints layers of glass before laminating them to create artistic cubes. For this decanter, Grootens took his inspiration from smoke, a key component for the Islay whisky brand.
“With delicate brush strokes I paint or draw on single panes that, layered, trimmed and polished, seemingly float in the glass creating three dimensional shapes, visualizing smoke within and exploring depth of flavor,” Grootens expressed according to Forbes.
The outlet reports that the etherial-looking decanter “shifts as you observe it,” making it a visual depiction of Port Ellen’s layered whiskies.
