The Schtick: Distilled by Bunnahabhain and aged for 21 years, this release is matured in PX wine casks and reminds me of a long gone LTO from them also in PX that I just can’t get my mind off of. Can this compare? Let’s find out.

Review #2637 | Whiskey Review #980
Distiller: Bunnahabhain
Bottler: Bunnahabhain
Brand: Bunnahabhain
Selection: None – General LTO Release
ABV: 53.6% ABV
Age: 21 Years
Nose: Rich malt and tons of sweet wine, toffee, bitter oak, fig and some stewed fruits. Lots going on here!
Taste: Thin to moderate palate, bitter oak and some acrid character here. The PX helps a lot here, full of raisin bread, toffee and sweet fig. The bitterness is odd though and sticks out dramatically.
Finish: Short finish, a touch bitter and acrid once more with gobs of PX in there. It’s a bit imbalanced, which is not what I anticipated here but it’s what it is.
Overall: Overall, this is a flop to me. It’s old, it’s matured in PX, and it should be everything I love but this release doesn’t quite hit what it could be. It’s good, but far from great – and at the age and price, consumers will expect great. Maybe I’m just caught up in the memory of their previous PX greatness.
Thanks for reading!
