The week of July 17 was a big week for Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits (SGWS) in Southern California. That day, the distributor acquired the Edrington portfolio, according to The Spirits Business. Some of Edrington’s whiskeys include The Macallan, Highland Park, Glenrothes, Brugal Rum and Wyoming Whiskey. One day later, Rémy Contreau followed suit and joined forces with SGWS, according to the outlet. With some of the most iconic names in spirits, it appears that SGWS will have an incredible advantage within the California marketplace.
“It’s a privilege for us to represent The Macallan, an exceptional single malt, along with Edrington’s other leading ultra-premium brands, in the dynamic and influential California market,” President and CEO at Southern Glazer’s, Wayne E Chaplin, said in a statement. “We are honored that the Edrington team trusts us to drive growth for their world-class luxury spirits in the largest beverage alcohol market in the country.”
The outlet reported that the company already works with Southern Glazer’s in the states of Nevada and Tennessee. Though things have been a bit bumpy from a financial standpoint for Edrington, it’s possible such a move might turn things around for them in the Golden State.
With the Rémy Contreau acquisition, SGWS will have access to brands like The Botanist, Bruichladdich, Louis XIII, Cointreau and Rémy Martin Cognac.
“At Rémy Cointreau, we are focused on cultivating strong and strategic partnerships that reflect our values and ambition for sustainable growth,” said Chief Executive Officer for Rémy Cointreau of the Americas Nicolas Beckers in a statement. “We are pleased to welcome Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits as our new exclusive distribution partner in California, as we continue to serve our valued clients and trade partners in this vital market for our premium portfolio of products. Southern Glazer’s has demonstrated a strong ability to execute in the national accounts space, as well as shown sustained commitment to winning the on-premise channel, which remain major priorities for Rémy Cointreau in California.”
