The Schtick: A new release from Penelope, this is Estate Collection Founders Reserve Wheat Whiskey. I have been a huge fan of Wheat Whiskeys for years now, releasing many in the single barrel program for several years, and this is an exciting buy in to the category from larger and larger brands. This release is 11 years old, was produced from just 24 barrels and is bottled at 107.6pf. This particular bottling comes from Lot E and is bottle 62 of 947. Let’s get to it.

Review #2582 | Bourbon Review #1116

Distiller: MGP

Bottler: Penelope

Brand: Penelope

Selection: None

ABV: 53.8% ABV

Age: 11 Years

Nose: I’m impressed how fruity the nose is – tons of caramel, apples, red berries, tropical fruit, heather and honey. After the fruits comes more caramel, some light oak, a hint of tobacco and this pleasant buttercream character.

Taste: The palate is rich – it is viscous and syrupy but not bitter, tannic, oaky. Buttery. Tons of apple cinnamon, dark toffee and caramelizes sugar, a hint of cinnamon and tons of apple, orange, cherry.

Finish: Long finish. Rich, hangs for a good while here, rich despite the ‘low’ proof and really satisfying. Caramels, honey, apple butter, more tobacco and toffee. Butter cream as a final taste.

Overall: I love wheat whiskey and I love to see more and more producers making it a point to release quality, well aged, wheat whiskeys. This is really great stuff, it is rich and complex without needing huge proof points to bring that satisfying, coatig mouthfeel. Its wheat done right.

Thanks for reading!
