The Schtick: Distilled by Scapa and aged for 21 years, this Cask Strength release is a whiskey I just didn’t think we’d ever see. Scapa has languished for years with scattered releases, mostly NAS bottlings in recent years for uninspiring prices. Ive long loved the brand since I first tried the 16 year at a restaurant in Milwaukee back in 2015 so to see a new release at cask strength with a great age statement and a price I didnt totally hate was an exciting development. How does it taste? Lets get into it.
Review #2587 | Scotch Review #956
Distiller: Scapa
Bottler: Scapa
Brand: Scapa
Selection: None
ABV: 52.9% ABV
Age: 21 Years
Disclosure: I bought this for about $300 in Wisconsin.
Nose: The nose is loaded with toasted caramel and almond, nutty and bright. Waffles, honey, cake batter, light pepper and just a touch of salinity.
Taste: Moderate palate. Apples and apple butter, toffee, light vanilla bean and tons of apple, lemon and citrus with a touch of minerality and pepper.
Finish: Pleasant finish, medium to long. More apple butter, toffee, butter cream and almond here.
Overall: This is a pleasant pour, but not quite as complex as I think I expected from a Scapa this old. Maybe it’s just a longing for that epic, old, 16yr to come back and Im missing that. Either way, this is totally pleasant, but hardly exceptional. And that’s fine, but that leaves it in very good camp which will be tricky for many given the asking price.
Thanks for reading!
