A Word On Scoring and Rankings

A note on rankings: As you may notice, I don’t use a 0-100 scale, nor do I rate things in line with the Robert Parker wine scale. Instead, I rate from 0 – 10 and in integer ranks. This means a 5 is an “Average” rating, with a Rank 0 being a Fail and a 10 being perfect.

This is a tough adjustment, mentally, for some, but makes a lot of sense in whiskey. I never saw the utility in having 100 points of scale, but only reliably using 83-98 on the scale, so I developed my own.  My scale looks like this:

The T8KE Scale

1 | Disgusting | So bad I poured it out.

2 | Poor | I wouldn’t consume by choice.

3 | Bad | Multiple flaws.

4 | Sub-par | Not bad, but better exists.

5 | Good | Good, just fine.

6 | Very Good | A cut above.

7 | Great | Well above average

8 | Excellent | Really quite exceptional.

9 | Incredible | An all time favorite

10 | Perfect | Perfect

So take solace when you see a 5, 6, 7, etc. These aren’t failing grades! They are actually generally good accolades, meaning they are scoring on par with average, or well above! If you see a 2, you know to stay away, though!
